Praying for rain

$45.00$75.00

Australia is a country that is susceptible to periodic droughts of which some have great severity. In 1895 a drought began which continued till 1904. The great drought then was at its worst in 1902. It had enormous consequences to the country. Many left the land ruined and with hardly any money and were ill prepared when the drought struck. There was another in 1899 with the clearing of trees and destruction by rabbits the winds created huge dust storms that buried sheep alive and fires.

We have many droughts now in Australia and our farmers and their families need all the help they can get. It is not easy being a farmer with a family on the land and the same threats they faced a century ago are still there. The farmers are incredibly important to our country they sustain our economy look after the land and fill our shelves with food at the grocers. So, the painting shows the hardship endured by this family trying to keep things together. Every day they will probably have to ensure the animals have food and water and they have enough themselves. Many farmers in Australia may have been generational farmers with the farms handed down. It would be there lot to walk off the land. In the little girls’ arms is a lamb for there will always be hope. So that is why it is called praying for rain
