The Melbourne Cup is the most famous horse race in Australia. The whole country stops for 3 minutes on the second Tuesday in November for the running of the Melbourne Cup. It is the world’s richest handicap race and draws over 100,000 people per year. The race is run at Flemington and the first Melbourne Cup race was run on a Thursday the 7th of November 1861. The first Melbourne Cup distance was 2 miles the race is now run over 3,200 meters just a touch shy of 2 miles. The first cup was won by Archer who was owned by Mr Etienne de Mestre and ridden by John Cutts. Archer won in 3 minutes 52 seconds. The price 1420 pounds and a gold watch. The race was first filmed on moving picture form in 1896 by a Marius Seister who later partnered up with an Australian by the name of Walter Bennett and they shot the horse race on Lumiere cinematography. That went on for the next 10 years filming the Melbourne Cup. The picture shows the joy of the race and the losses. But the horses are running the wrong way. How some people wished they could undo the decisions of the past and redo them again. So basically, have made a better choice of horse.
