Cassowaries in the Daintree

$45.00$75.00 $22.50 - $37.50

The Daintree is the rain forest in far north Queensland full of many things to see. One of them is Cassowaries which are hard to spot unless you are lucky. Their colours are vibrant and they live off mainly fruits from the Daintree’s. They are shy and have a canny ability to disappear before the human knows they are there. Beautiful and colourful birds and I am lucky to have spotted them twice, once at Mission Beach and Daintree forest near Cape Tribulation in far north Queensland.

The cassowary is a rare bird and endangered it is found only in wet tropical rain forests such as the Daintree. Cassowaries feed mainly on fallen fruit such as figs and quandongs off the forest floor. Obviously, these birds are waiting for this fruit to fall. It is a rather solitary bird and sometimes a few may gather under a productive fruit tree as these two are doing. With clearing and farming they are disappearing, and pockets survive. The community at mission beach and Cairns have gathered to help save this beautiful big bird. The wet tropics World Heritage zone protects their habitat and the conservation status. The birds are easily killed by cars and attacks by dogs especially the chicks. But the male cassowary will become aggressive in defence of the chicks. It is such an incredible bird a wonder and despite their huge size they are rarely seen.

Printed on quality 200gsm gloss art paper. Packaged and sent in a mailing tube to protect edges.
